First storm threat of the season

Well, preparations are being made for our first possible storm threat. Jay is hauling our boat out this afternoon and on Monday CYOA will be making a decision about securing their boats. I went to cost u less yesterday to stock up on a few items and today I'll be getting gas for the generator and gas grill. The condo we're in has accordion shutters on all the windows and doors so we're going to check them this morning to make sure they close. UVI preparedness committee will be meeting on Monday to put our plan in place. One of the storm tracks has it coming right over us but other tracks has it going south. It's supposed to be upgraded to a named storm later this morning, Emily. Keep your fingers crossed that it goes south.

From NOAA:
1. SATELLITE IMAGES AND NOAA BUOY DATA INDICATE THAT THE LARGE AND
ELONGATED LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM CENTERED ABOUT 650 MILES EAST OF
THE NORTHERN WINDWARD ISLANDS CONTINUES TO BECOME BETTER
ORGANIZED...AND IT COULD DEVELOP INTO A TROPICAL DEPRESSION AT ANY
TIME. THIS SYSTEM HAS A HIGH CHANCE...NEAR 100 PERCENT...OF
BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 24 TO 48 HOURS AS IT
MOVES WEST-NORTHWESTWARD NEAR 15 MPH. IF THE LOW BECOMES A TROPICAL
CYCLONE LATER TODAY...TROPICAL STORM WATCHES OR WARNINGS WOULD
LIKELY BE REQUIRED FOR PORTIONS OF THE NORTHERN WINDWARD ISLANDS
AND THE LEEWARD ISLANDS. INTERESTS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD CLOSELY
MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM. AN AIR FORCE RESERVE UNIT
RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT IS SCHEDULED TO INVESTIGATE THIS
DISTURBANCE LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

Friday Beach Pic

Friday Beach Pic, originally uploaded by captainjay.

It's the weekend! What a week. Lots going on at work and CYOA. So I'm defintely ready for the weekend. Jay works tomorrow so I get to go shopping for a new fridge for the condo, the one we have is dying. I like the ones the landlord is picking out so I don't mind shopping :-)

We went to Norman island last weekend so this pic is from Pirates Bight. Nice place to hang out and have a cocktail and some food. Our boat broke down after this trip so we won't be going anywhere for awhile :-( Buy that's a whole nother story.

Anyway, have a great weekend!

Weekend Weather

And so it begins......the "season" is upon us. So that means screwed up weather on the weekends. Last weekend we didn't go boating because of weather and it looks like we're in for the same this weekend. A tropical wave is heading our way that will bring rain and choppy seas. Jay is off again this weekend but it looks like no boating. Hopefully it moves through fast so that maybe we can get out on Sunday.

UVI on St. John

UVI on St. John

Uvi on St. John

Uvi on St. John

I got to work at the new UVI Academic Center on St. John this week. It turned out very nice. It has Several video conference rooms, office space and a student lounge area. There are only a few classes going on for the summer session but the fall is looking like a pretty good schedule. St. John students can come to the center to take a class via video conference instead of coming over to St. Thomas. They can also use the space to study or collaborate with students on other campuses. Right now the IT staff on St. Thomas is taking turns working shifts at the St. John center which seems to be working out pretty good. I know I enjoyed going over and looking forward to my next shift at the end of the month.

The St. John community is very excited about it as they should be. UVI on St. John, what a great idea :-)

Congratulations to Ruth and St. John Spice for their successful web cam in Cruz Bay, St. John. Today they hit the 5 million mark! St. John Spice is my favorite store on St. John and the owners Ruth and Ron are wonderful people. If you head over to St. John you have to stop by and check them out. In the meantime you can check out their website:

Friday Beach Pic

Friday Beach Pic, originally uploaded by captainjay.

Its the weekend! And it finally stopped raining! We had a crazy front move thru that dropped bunches of rain, lightening, thunder, you name it. Not fun at all. But it's Friday so all is good!

Friends of ours sailed over to Culebra for the week. We have definitely got to get back over there for a few days. They've been texting me pics of food, cocktails, beaches, purchases, fresh tuna that they caught, just plain evil. ;-)

So the above pic is Tortuga beach on Culebrita sent to me by my evil friends. Lol

Enjoy!! And have a great weekend!

Ferry on the rocks

Ferry on the rocks, originally uploaded by captainjay.
Well apparently a ferry leaving St. John last night after the fireworks heading back to St. Croix, ran up on the rocks at Great St. James. 98 passenger and four crew had to be transported to St. Thomas. The 5 injured were transported to Red Hook where emergency medical service personnel were waiting. The other passengers and crew were taken to the Winward Passage hotel. The accident is under investigation.

Boating Video and Happy Fourth of July

We got a new video camera for my birthday, it's a Go-Pro HD. This is some video we shot on our recent triop to Culebra. Still trying to get the hang of the camera. It's a point and shoot camera with different mounts and a waterproof case.
Happy Fourth of July.

Netflix in de islands

Netflix in de islands, originally uploaded by captainjay.

Netflix finally opened up steaming video in St. Thomas! Yea! Up until this week we were blocked from watching Netflix movies online because we were outside the contiguous US even though we pay monthly subscription. But I received an email this week letting me know that they finally opened up the instant watch feature! It came in handy earlier today when WAPA was off for several hours. I watched a movie on my iPhone!
